For the cover of Debbie Harry’s album KooKoo, Giger pictured the bewitching singer looking almost catatonic. As the lead singer of Blondie, she had always had a colourful, blonde and plastic look, but here she was pale, with jet-black hair and big needles piercing her face. The work is made even more bleak by the skewered skin. Giger came up with the idea because he had just had an acupuncture session with his friend and doctor Paul Tobler, the brother of his first partner Li Tobler. Giger stated that he used the four needles to represent the four natural elements.
As Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page recalled, the sensuality of the picture is concealed rather than obvious. It played a part in the evolution of the image of Debbie Harry, who was previously considered the Marilyn Monroe of rock.
