The Egg Silo
Of all the designs that Giger created for the Alien set, only one was not built. It was called the “egg silo” in the production notes and it was an organic dome that was like a mix between an egg and a flower. Its size and mysterious nature were meant to inspire the same feeling of reverence as a holy pyramid. Due to budget issues and cuts to the script, it was not built until 30 years later, when director Ridley Scott decided to return to the franchise with Prometheus, in which the focus is not on the creature but on exploration of the mythology of the alien civilization behind the derelict spaceship in the first film.
This drawing shows a chamber inside the derelict spaceship where the eggs are waiting to be discovered. When Giger was asked to give it concrete form, he decided to build the entire scene. The artist shaped the floor of the chamber – where the alien eggs were bathed in blue light, which was produced on the set by lasers – and the section of the wall near it, as well as the sloping ceiling, which he painted by hand.
